The sheer scale of Texas Medical Center is mind-blowing. Housed on a five-kilometre block in Houston and a neighbourhood all of its own, TMC sees 10 million patients, performs 180,000 surgeries and delivers 25,000 babies each year. It’s home to the world’s largest children’s hospital and the world’s largest cancer hospital – the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
I was fortunate enough to be part of a Kiwi MedTech delegation to the TMC earlier this month which was led by Callaghan Innovation, CMDT and MedTech CoRE. The group was made up of a cross-section of New Zealand med-tech companies and researchers with symbiotic interests.
So what does this mean for Veriphi?
As part of the trip, I was able to meet independently with a number of hospitals under the TMC umbrella to discuss the Veriphi solution and also speak to a number of industry experts with regards to medication error in hospitals. This proved invaluable in terms of getting a better understanding of the US market. These discussions clarified the exciting opportunities for Veriphi, particularly with regards to the challenges posed by the volume of drugs handled by larger hospitals and the difficulty in managing medication safety in complex hospital distribution channels.
I also got clarity around go-to-market strategies and the importance of internal, clinical advocates in championing the proposition.
As a follow-on from this, discussions are ongoing with potential partners at Texas Medical Center and we are currently excited about the progress these are making.
